We have gathered here to celebrate the International Labour’s Day at our company; it is celebrated annually on 1st May to commemorate the hard work and dedication of labours towards the organisation irrespective of their power and position, roles and responsibilities. Labour Day is an honour to the social and economic achievements of the workers. Labour Day is also known as ‘May Day’ or International Worker’s Day and is celebrated as a National Holiday in approximately 80 countries. It ideally constitutes annual and national acknowledgment towards the devotion and contributions of the workers who ensure the prosperity, strength and well-being of the country.
Our organisation gives utmost importance to the hard work of every employee and believes in giving them equal rights. I am associated with this company for around 35 years now and I haven’t come across a single issue or grievance that is related to the suppression of the labour’s rights.
Since we have many new joiners in the organisation who are also present today; I would like to give a brief about the origin of Labour’s day. May Day or the Labour Day originated in the late 19th Century from the United States labour union movement advocates eight hours of work per day. Since the working conditions in the late nineteenth century were pathetic and unsafe for the workers, they had to work for around 12-16 hours per day. In 1884, The Federation of Organized Trades and Labour Unions (FOLTU) passed a resolution that 8 working hours shall constitute a legal working day from 1st May, 1886 onwards. Several movements, strikes, etc were undertaken by the labours demanding a standard eight hours of working day. Five years later, 1st May was recognized as a National holiday by a socialist organization and gradually several countries adopted this culture.
May Day is purely celebrated to pay tribute and honour to the contributions made by the workers towards the betterment of an organisation and consequently our society. But today, the Labour Day has evolved as a labour union celebration losing the deeper and the true significance of this day.
Even though, our organisation strongly recognizes the rights of the labours also known as employees, but there are several companies which actually take the employees for granted. Though Labour Day was started to implement the 8-hour of work per day schedule, but an employee has several other rights in the organisation too. It’s important that the organisation doesn’t solely operate with the intention of generating profit; but it should also take care of the needs and requirements of the employees without whom, the company cannot achieve its goals. At the same time, labours or employees should also respect the work culture and stick to the code of conduct of the organisation they are working with.
Labour Day certainly protects the rights of the labours and the employees should not use it as a weapon to threaten the management in order to achieve undue advantages; only then will the purpose of the Labour Day will be fulfilled.

Thank you for being a part of this forum. Today we will discuss about the Labour Day, which is also called as May Day. It is celebrated worldwide on May 1st every year. Our organisation is a Private Welfare Organisation that works in association with the State Government; we basically work for the development of the workers that belong to the low strata. Some of the very renowned Industrialists are also present amongst us today who support this movement. Friends, whenever we hear the term labour, we imagine tough or hard work or physical labour. We have gathered here to focus on some important rights of the labour who work for the big and prominent organisations.
Even though historically Labour Day originated in the US in order to get a bill passed that advocated 8 hours of work for the labours which got accepted and since 1886 onwards, celebration of Labour Day started in order to honour the hard work of the labours or employees.
The fact is that no company can flourish or even sustain without labour. But when we say, we also mean any or every employee working for the company. Companies should also ensure other than following the 8 hours of work that labours or employees are not discriminated on the basis of race, caste, creed, gender, disability, etc and they should be paid competitive wages or salary. In addition to this, each labour is an individual first and thus should be valued irrespective of their position or job responsibilities.
It is also true that the labours are the driving force of our Indian economy and industrial progress. Labours have a great political influence too as certain Labour issues have helped several political parties win elections. Labours help run factories, build roads, buildings, etc drill for oil, and many more.
Today’s labours are is no longer ignorant or uneducated people who don’t know their rights or who can be suppressed easily. But there are some big companies which import labours from remote areas or villages. These people are naïve and since they are poor, they agree to work on any term and conditions. The members of our organisation travel in those areas and listen to the issues faced by them and highlight the same to the state government and work towards their betterment. We have also opened schools in many villages and impart education to children and grown up people.
Our organisation also works against child labour. We have identified several mines and factories that employ children in their production unit. The issue had been highlighted last year by one of the NGOs and we immediately took up the issue and liberated all those children from such units. We are also providing education to them now and art and craft training to their respective parents so that they can earn their livelihood.
I would appeal to all the industrialists, government, both private and government firms, including the common people that we should join hands in eradicating evil from our society and support the low strata people so that they can also earn a respectable life.

This day is usually celebrated on 1st May every year but it tends to also vary as per the countries. This day is also known as the May day. It is celebrated in order to acknowledge the economic and social achievements of workers. It is celebrated to promote and encourage the labour associations.The theme of celebrating this May Day is to finish the struggle as well as to promote the requirement of eight-hour work day, this was triggered as earlier the standard working hours ranged from 12 to 16 hours a day. To overcome people’s agitation and safeguard themselves from moral and physical injuries it was essential to cut it short to 8 hours a day. This day has utmost importance in every country as this lays the dedication towards the efforts of the work force.
Just imagine, if we people had to work for 12 to 16 hours a day how restless and irritated we would have always felt. Honestly, at present I even wish that there should be a provision of flexible hours depending on the workload on an employee or worker. This day has equal or if i may say more importance that the appraisal day to the workers. This day has led a great impact by the reduction of working hours and laying down the base for appraising the accomplishments and achievements of the work force.
This celebration has become a historic significance all over the world and celebrated by the Labor unions worldwide. Labourers always put in their efforts to make our lives better and indeed they deserve the honour for the work they do. In India, this labour day was celebrated for the first time in year 1923. This day is a special occasion when countries worldwide celebrate the true spirit of the working class and labourers. It’s the day when workers get together and celebrate their strengths which tend to indicate how effectively they always have been able to and will continue to struggle to bring in positive reforms for the working class of the society.
We all should safeguard the working class in all respects that we can do. It is indeed a special work force that put in efforts for their well being and better lives. Though this day is celebrated as a national holiday in most of the countries but we should not just deal with this day as a holiday but also as the true dedication to honour their efforts and activities done. We should encourage our children and other associates to celebrate this day in their own way and should know the importance of this day.

As we all know Labour Day is celebrated across the globe on 1st May of every year. This day is celebrated to pay the tribute to the workers who have made great contributions to make the world more strong and prosper.
Earlier in the nineteenth century working conditions were severe and by then workers went on strike and demanded for eight hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation and eight hours for rest.
Labour Day itself constitutes many privileges and welfare for the working men and women. It has cut down the daily working hours from 12-16 hours to 8 hours in a day. No company can compel any worker to work beyond 8 hours without getting paid for those extra hours.
Minimum wage rate has been fixed in order to safeguard the interest of the working people. Unions has been made to protect their rights.
The Child Act 1986 prohibited employing any child below 14 years and is considered as a criminal offence. No company can grow without hiring people who dedicatedly work for them. So in return of that they deserve the respect and fair judgement for the duties delivered on their part.
Labour Day has given the right to all the workers to enjoy the freedom and privileges they have gained for their contribution to the nation.
