Hello Friends – Greetings of the Day to everyone!
Today, I am going to address a very pertinent issue that people are suffering from in the contemporary times, i.e. Obesity. First of all, I would like to know what categorizes a person as obese in your opinion. Perhaps someone who appears overweight, i.e. more than the actual size of his/her body. However, to put it in precise terms, it is characterized by the Body Mass Index or BMI, which is a general formula that draws a comparison between height and weight in order to estimate the amount of fat present in one’s body. For instance, if one has a BMI ranging between 25-30 kg per meter square; then he/she is believed to be overweight. Secondly, in case one has a BMI of more than 30, then that person is considered obese.
It is very unfortunate that the word obese is made more common. At present, 30 percent of children and 25 percent of adults are considered as obese in the UK, which cost the National Health Survey around one billion pounds every year. The rates in our country, i.e. India, would definitely be alarming as almost every person next door suffers from obesity issue.
The problem of obesity has to do a lot with our sedentary lifestyle and of course our eating habits. The number of calories intake suggested for men is three thousand five hundred whereas for women it’s two thousand calories. Whereas people who are thin may do regular work out and people who are overweight do not put any effort towards bringing their weight under control. As per the BBC report, three out of four obese people do not do any physical work out during the week.
As far as children and teenagers are concerned, they are more into electrical games, like the ‘Play Station’ and the ‘X box’. Due to electrical games, they spend most of their free time indoors and avoid going outside or doing physical activities. I, therefore, feel that the government should take some pro-active measures with respect to the growing numbers of obese children. According to me, one takes a path of obesity right from his/her childhood only. A child mostly eats what his/her parents give him/her. I am sure, if they are given healthy food options or inculcated this habit of eating healthy food, they will never turn to the habit of eating unhealthy food and will always remain conscious of their health.
I am sure that if people will gain awareness on how to lose weight and why it is important to lose weight, then a change can definitely come in our society. Then, they will not have to live under the fear of being attacked by a disease or becoming slothful, etc. A fit body and a sound mind can lay strong foundation and can work towards a better tomorrow. So let’s make a point to enlighten as many people possible on this issue and encourage a healthy eating habit.
Thank You!
Respected Audience and My Dear Children – Warm Greetings to all!
Today, I am going to address the topic called obesity. In the present times, number of people suffering from the problem of obesity is growing. With an arm chair job, inactive lifestyle and most important of all unhealthy eating habits have contributed towards the growing cases of obesity. Obesity is described as a condition wherein the weight of body increases because of an excessive amount of fat that gets deposited in our body. This deposit of unnecessary fat can be caused due to unhealthy lifestyle, genetics problem or a laid-back lifestyle. Obesity has become a serious issue in the healthcare sector these days and most countries are grappling with this problem. The rate of obesity in the world has grown rapidly due to technological advancements and people’s poor control over their eating habits. Though there are several factors that contribute towards the rising cases of obesity, but the chief issue has always been laziness and the absence of work out.
The impact of obesity cannot be overlooked because obese people are compromising with their health and that is what leading to various health issues, such as diabetes, heart ailments, cancerous diseases, arthritis, etc. Obesity condition also results in low self esteem and depression. The number of overweight people has increased considerably and it’s a high time that we deal with this situation carefully and pay serious attention towards it. Thanks to the state-of-the art technological advancement in Science that now there are many and better ways of reducing the condition of obesity.
One of the popular treatments is the intake of diet pills as well as drugs that can help curb one’s hunger. For more extreme cases, people also resort to surgical methods. There are two common methods, viz. gastric banding or stomach stapling where bands or staples are used to make the stomach thinner. Then there is other method called Roux-en-Y, which helps in making the stomach thinner and where the food can go around in parts of the small intestine. These treatments may sound easy, but they carry some risk factors for the patient. All these things cause the same effect, i.e. making the person consume less food.
The less food one eats, the lesser calories go inside the body, thereby reducing the level of obesity. The diet pills are not advised because they are believed to carry some side effects with them and even surgeries can cause bone diseases and gallstones to some. But in case the method suits the body type, then it can greatly benefit the person as many patients are believed to lose 50 percent of excess fat in a period of 12 to 18 months. Even though Science can help in curbing the obesity level, but it does carry some limitations. Despite all the medications being available, everything depends on the body type of the person and what works for him/her.
However, whatever the situation may be healthy eating habit is a must and if combined with a bit of daily dose of exercise, then it can do wonders. This is all I have to say!
Thank You!
Good Morning Friends – How are you all doing?
First of all, I would like to thank you all for assembling in the hall and attending this session on Obesity. Believe it or not, but obesity has become a serious health condition and major cause of concern these days as it is obesity that gives rise to other major health issues in one’s body and makes life miserable. Obesity is thus a growing health issue not only in our own country, but globally as well. Obesity is described as a state when someone is so overweight that it becomes a threat to his/her health. This condition typically arises due to excessive eating, particularly an unhealthy diet and of course lack of workout.
In the modern times with the availability of increasingly low-priced and high calorie food, such as junk food or fast food which contain high amount of sugar, salt, fat and when combined with our laid-back lifestyle cause our body irreparable harm. Changing transportation modes and growing urbanization are other important factors that contribute towards increasing condition of obesity. The cases of obesity have in fact drastically grown in the last couple of decades across the globe and there is no reason even to get surprised at it is due to a large number of factors that are responsible for it.
Obesity, therefore, is seen no less than as a serious, chronic medical condition which has a negative impact on various parts of our body. People who are obese or overweight develop a much higher risk of acquiring severe medical conditions, like:
Other than sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy food and the absence of physical workout, there are other factors too, which even though complex leads to obesity. These factors are lifestyle, genetics and how your body makes use of energy. We generally tend to associate obesity with physical appearance, but it is actually a medical condition and needs to be addressed so that it doesn’t affect a person’s health. The major cause of concern with the obese people is that the additional fat tissue in their body requires nutrients and oxygen in order to survive, which in turn needs the blood vessels to pump more blood to the fat tissues. This boosts the workload of the heart as it must circulate more blood with the help of additional blood vessels. More the blood gets circulated; more pressure is put on artery walls. Greater pressure on the artery walls boosts the flow of blood pressure. Besides, extra weight can increase the risk of heart rate and hamper the ability of your body to circulate blood through vessels.
However, this condition can be avoided as people do not become obese overnight. It only happens gradually when the energy intake is much more than the energy you burn during any physical activity. So try to cut down on your extra meal and unhealthy eating habit in order to build a healthy body.
Thank You!

The status of obesity in India has reached alarming proportions in the present century so much so that morbid obesity affects about 5 percent of our country’s population. India is slowly and gradually becoming a part of those developing countries where the rate of obesity is very high. Processed, unhealthy food is readily available anywhere in our country and which has even been combined with the global food marketplace. This, integrated with the rising income of the middle class, is resulting in an increase in the average caloric consumption per individual in the middle class section and households with above income. The state of obesity is a serious risk element for cardiovascular disease and such NGOs as the Indian Heart Association have been trying to raise consciousness of the people on this issue.

People who suffer from this medical condition are at a great risk of developing one or more serious health issues leading to deteriorating health or in extreme cases even early death. The most rampant obesity-related diseases are:
